New Online Service Assists Maryland Towing Companies with Insurance Company Notification Requirements

The Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA) has launched a new online service to assist Maryland towing companies with notifying automobile insurance companies after towing a vehicle from a parking lot.  The new service is available on the state’s official website, http://www.maryland.gov, under Business Services.  MVA has established the registry with the Insurance Industry as a result of Senate Bill 401 enacted by the 2012 Maryland General Assembly.  The law requires a person who tows a vehicle from a parking lot to notify the owner, any secured party, and the insurer of record by certified mail within three days after removing the vehicle.

The MVA Insurance Contact Registry provides towing companies with easy access to up-to-date contact information for automobile insurance companies free of charge.  Contact information can be searched by entering the automobile insurance company’s name or the North American Industrial Classification (NAIC) Code. To better assist towing companies in the field, the mobile friendly Insurance Contact Registry can be accessed on any tablet or smartphone device and is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

“The Insurance Contact Registry was developed for the Maryland Motor Vehicle Administration by NIC Inc. without requiring additional state funds under a self-funded eGovernment services contract with the State Department of Information Technology (DoIT),” said DoIT Secretary and Chief Information Officer Elliot Schlanger.  “This is another great example of how Maryland’s constituents are better served under the creative and cost-effective self-funding eGov model, as well as the partnership between NIC and the State.”

Additional online services offered by the Maryland MVA include the driver and vehicle records suite of services.  Businesses, including towing and insurance companies may search driver and vehicle history records.  Vehicle history record searches provide title, registration, and lien information for authorized entities under the Federal Driver Privacy Protection Act.
